SOCKS AND FLYING SAUCERS
Storyline: SOCKS AND FLYING SAUCERS is a surreal slice of life 10-minute short film that blends naturalistic storytelling with colorful animation and practical effects. Think of Andrea Arnold with a hint of fantasy in the vain of Atlanta or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. We are touching on themes of poverty, escapism, addiction, family dysfunction, neglect and of course, flying saucers. Following a 16 year old through her nightly routine, this short seeks to find horror in the mundane and truth in fantasy.
ROLES:
[BARBY] 50 to 55 years old, all ethnicities female. Alex and Izzy’s mother. She is struggling with her demons. Once a pageant girl, she is now an alcoholic and has developed a prescription drug dependency that has ultimately left her unable to parent her two daughters. While she loves her daughters, her need to escape life is strong. While this role is small, it is vital to this short. One day of work. Must be able to authentically play drunken-ness and portray vomiting as a symptom of alcohol poisoning. $125/day, guaranteed. SUPPORTING
[BOB] 50 to 60 years old, all ethnicities male. Alex and Izzy’s father. Avoidant, unavailable, working class. Unhappy with his job, family, and life. Struggling with depression, out of shape. Escapes his wife’s addiction by disappearing into the world of Call of Duty. Loves his daughters, but unequipped to confront the dysfunction of his house, so he leaves them to their own devices against his better judgement. One scene, but very important to the tone of the short. We are looking for an authentic and down-played performance. $125/day, guaranteed. SUPPORTING
